The Deputy General Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has accused the Electoral Commission and the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) of engaging in ballot stuffing in the 2020 general elections.
Although the Commission has dismissed such claims and challenged the NDC to provide evidence to prove its allegations, Mr Peter Otokunor, speaking on PM Express insisted that such discrepancies occurred in favour of the NPP.
Interacting with Evans Mensah on Monday, Mr Otokunor noted that prior to the December polls, ballot papers were burnt and two individuals were arrested at Ejisu for having in their possession thumb-printed ballot papers in favour of the then NPP presidential candidate, Nana Akufo-Addo.
Also, he alleged that the Commission assigned to Ghana Publishing Company, headed by David Asante who is part of the elections team of the NPP, the mandate to print out ballot papers.
"This is the worst election in the history of this country. A lot of irregularities happened and one particular one is ballot stuffing," he asserted.
To prove his claims, Mr Otokunor revealed that there was one million votes difference between the total vote cast for the presidential and parliamentary election carried out by the Commission.
"If you put all the Parliamentary votes together for NPP, CPP, NDC, and put all the votes for the Presidential together, all the aspirants including Akua Donkor, you would realize that the votes in the presidential election surpasses that of the Parliamentary by close to about 1million votes.
"What Jean Mensah and Dr Bossman are telling us is that there are some one million people who went to the polling station, jumped the Parliamentary and went to the Presidential and voted there and left," he added.
According to him, such findings was not presented at the Supreme Court during the 2021 election petition hearing due to the unanimous nature of the judges to dismiss submissions by the counsel for the petitioner, John Mahama.
"You saw what happened in court...We were making demands for discoveries, it was denied. We brought pink sheets that we thought were overvoting, it was denied, so what do you expect us to do. Everything that we threw in there was denied, unanimous FC.
"Everybody saw from the full glares of the cameras that we were prevented from making a case in court in actual fact."
Earlier on Monday, Deputy Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC) Dr. Bossman Asare described as untrue claims by former President John Mahama that there was ballot stuffing during the 2020 elections.
“We call on the former President in the interest of our democracy to provide evidence of the stuffing of the ballot boxes by the EC. This is not a matter to be ignored and we call on the Ghana Police Service to investigate this,” he added.
He noted that across the 38,622 polling stations, only the parliamentary election at Savelugu recorded a case of overvoting.
But “at the end of the poll, the ballots cast are crosschecked against the voters who were verified and issued the ballot papers. The transparency of our processes from the beginning to the end makes this impossible,” he emphasised.
