Member of Parliament for the Buem Constituency, Kofi Adams has said that Parliament is not opposed to the Police's filing of charges against Madina MP Francis-Xavier Sosu.
According to him, Parliament’s initial opposition to the MP's arrest was because the House is concerned about having the rights and privileges of Mr. Sosu protected.
Mr Adams told JoyNews’ Kwesi Parker Wilson on Wednesday that, it is for this reason that Speaker Alban Bagbin referred the matter to the Privileges Committee to pry into and make recommendations to the plenary for a final action to be taken.
He said, “for all this while we have been indicating that nobody is opposed to the application of the rule of law. What we want is that due processes be respected and that if the Police have decided to charge him that is good.”
This comes after Police formally filed charges, including causing damage to public property, against Francis-Xavier Sosu due to a demonstration he led in his constituency.
The embattled MP is supposed to show up in court to answer the charges on November 8, the Director General of Police Public Relations, ACP Kwasi Ofori, told JoyNews.
“The Police has obtained a criminal summons and has been duly served for him to appear in court on November 8…as we enumerated, the charges include obstructing the highway, causing damage to public property,” he said.
According to ACP Kwasi Ofori, the Police Service has not received any invitation from Parliament regarding contempt of Parliament served on some senior officers who allegedly manhandled the MP.
Meanwhile, Mr Adams said the MP is prepared to appear in court to answer the charges once the Police duly serve him.
“We (Parliament) are not opposed to the charge, we are not opposed to it at all. They find him, serve him, he will answer at the court. You must also realise that service on him is gonna go through another process.”
“Because there are constitutional provisions, to serve a sitting member of Parliament, so they have to go through those processes and once they do that he will be in court to answer to those charges preferred against him,” Mr Adams added.
