The Executive Director of the GNPC Foundation, Dr. Dominic Eduah, has expressed worry over how the education of the pupils and students of Apeatse may be badly affected by Thursday’s explosion.
He explains that since the only basic school in the community was also destroyed during the explosion there is the need to expedite efforts in getting the children back to school.
To this end, the GNPC Foundation has promised the Chiefs and people of Apeatse a new 6-unit classroom block to replace the only 3-unit Basic School in the community destroyed by the explosion.
The foundation according to Dr. Edua will also build a 3 -unit classroom block for Junior High School students and sanitary facilities for the community.
The Executive Director who paid a visit to the community on Monday, January 24th, 2022 with a team from the Foundation to ascertain the effect of the disaster on education in the community, said the Foundation`s contribution is to restore academic activities in the community.
“The education of a people must not be suspended even amid disaster since the academic calendar cannot wait for the people of Apeatse. Immediately the State Housing Corporation is ready we would be ready too,“ Dr. Edua said.
“We all heard what happened in this community last week. Having waited for a few days to allow the rescue effort, we decided to assess the situation and the possible solution that GNPC could also offer,” he added
Dr. Dominic Edua further stated that once the team got to the town, “two things came up. Thus, education is at the heart of what we do at the GNPC Foundation, but we realized that the only 3-unit classroom block they have here has been destroyed by the explosion, and they don’t even have a JHS.
“So what we have decided to do is to immediately look at possibly providing a 6-Unit Classroom Block being primary and a 3-Unit Classroom block for JHS. In addition, we are going to provide them with a new sanitary facility.
“We are going to talk with the State Housing Corporation to know their preparations towards the reconstruction so that the component that we are supposed to provide can be added.“
The GNPC Foundation also announced a scholarship package for university students who are residents of the Apeatse community.
Dr. Dominic Edua said the foundation will give special treatment in terms of scholarship to university students within the community and called for accurate data on all university students in the community.
“Having discussed with my trustee board, they have agreed that we treat scholarship for tertiary students here special. With that it means that the data we gather here will not go through the scholarship procedures but they will be awarded accordingly,” he said.
“The scholarship will entail their tuition, accommodation and monthly stipend,” he added.
