An Executive Committee Member of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Dr. Tony Aubynn, says the Association is not on a collision course with government concerning the choice of coach for the Black Stars.
According to him, the GFA’s recent interactions with Assistant Coach of Borussia Dortmund, Otto Addo is merely because he is the Assistant Coach of the Black Stars.
His comment was in relation to speculations that the GFA and government were competing against each other to get their favourites to coach the Black Stars ahead of its clash with Nigeria in the World Cup qualifiers.
According to reports the government is eyeing Chris Hughton for the job whereas the GFA was pegging Otto Addo for the position.
Dr. Aubynn, speaking on JoyNews’ PM Express, stated that such speculations should be avoided entirely.
He said, “Yes I can confirm that the GFA president is not in Ghana and let’s note that Otto Addo is currently the Assistant Coach of the Black Stars so it is not unusual that the President of the FA would have some interaction with him especially the fact that we’re going to have our final qualification game for the World Cup tournament with Nigeria so I think that should be the context within which our President will be in Germany.”
He added that “Let me just be clear here, there’s no contest between government and GFA. It places a wedge between the two and obviously, GFA cannot fight government or compete with government.
“But it should be clear that with the consent of government GFA has the responsibility to manage football so government could make suggestions or individuals within government or some private individuals could even make suggestions that o look we know a coach here.
“Sometimes even the players that we scout you’ll be there and he was watching EPL and I saw a name which sounded like a Ghanaian he did well and people follow. So I just want to emphasise that the GFA is not on a collision course with government so that has to be clear.”
