Twenty-five residents of Bukom Arena in James town, Accra, have been summoned by the Accra Metropolitan Assembly Metro Environmental Health Inspectors for breach of environmental bye-laws.
The culprits were issued with the summons when the Joycleanghana Campaign team stormed the neighborhood to enforce the newly launched environmental cleanliness programme dubbed, 'Operation Clean Your Frontage'.
It was found that a popular Kenkey factory with huge patronage has been situated on the edge of a chocked drainage that has been covered with slabs in front of the house which has bred maggots and emitting a foul stench.
The team got there when some customers had already queued to buy their kenkey and fried fish.
The customers were surprised when the AMA taskforce removed the slabs covering the drainage, as it turned out that both solid and liquid waste were stuck there.

Some residents reported that houses around the kenkey factory do not have toilet facilities. Therefore, the situation compels residents to dump feaces into that same drainage close to the food joint.
Some shop owners were also found to have built on gutters in front of homes, making it difficult for city authorities to desilt those gutters.
The Environmental Health Officers later caught up with Braimah Kamoko, alias 'Bukom Banku', the boxer, who has been made an Ambassador for 'Operation Clean Your Frontage' in the area. He promised his continuous support for the programme.
'Bukom Banku' said environmental awareness in the community is low, thus some residents throw toilet in black plastic bags into gutters.

The residents were forced to sweep and clean all the gutters.
Speaking after the programme, Director of the AMA Environment Metro Health Directorate, Madam Florence Kuukyi said she was overwhelmed by the number of offences recorded in the community.
She said the Assembly will not hesitate to prosecute them if they refuse to comply with their directives.
