The newly elected leadership of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has called for the support of members to enable the Association deliver on its mandate.

The GNAT President, Rev Isaac Owusu said a united membership would make the Association formidable to withstand any form of setbacks or stumbling blocks, be it politically or socially motivated.

He was speaking at separate meetings during a tour of the Volta and Oti Regions, where members were debriefed on the decisions taken at this year's congress in Kumasi.

Rev Isaac Owusu said, "if we remain united, no government, no authority can stumble over us. But if we remain divided, when officers declare action, and our followers are staying in the classroom, there is no way we can make any impact."

He implored membership not to "sit on the fence", but support the leadership as it strives to deal with identified challenges for the common good of the members.

"Yes, as leaders, we admit that we have challenges in our Association, but together, we can surmount every mountain ahead of us. We want to assure you that as your newly elected officers, we are ready to serve, so you should also be ready to give your support.

The General Secretary, Thomas Musah, said the leadership is poised to work in the best interest of the members, and improve on policies being implemented.

He requested members to trust the current leadership, made up of people of integrity, which has engaged some of the best firms to ensure best practices, for better and transparent administering of the Association.

"The people that we are working with are well established, they are well accomplished people. They have their integrity and reputation to protect", he stressed.

The executives took turns to answer questions on salary increment, promotion, responsibility allowance, pension scheme, the cancer fund, GNAT housing scheme, 1 Teacher, 1 Laptop policy, among others.

The GNAT headquarters presented 20 life jackets to be used by members in riverine communities in the Biakoye District and GHC5,000 to an ailing member, all in the Oti Region.

Some 3 bags of flour, 4 cartons of tomato paste, and a water tank were presented to the Hohoe School for the Blind and Deaf.

The tour allowed the newly elected executives to interact with members in the Oti and Volta Regions.
