Constituency chairmen of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Ashanti Region say they back proposals by the party to limit the number of presidential aspirants to two.The move to reduce the number to two will prevent a recurrence of the 2007 situation where 17 people contested for the party’s flagbearership.The NPP holds a delegates conference in December and delegates are expected to endorse the new proposals to amend the party’s constitution.Spokesperson for the association of the NPP Constituency Chairmen, Asare Bediako, said the proposal is the only way to guarantee party unity for the 2012 general elections.Some political observers have cited the large number of flagbearer aspirants as a cause of the NPP’s defeat in the last presidential election.But the proposal of limiting the number to two has triggered a lot controversy within the party.The Minority in Parliament have hinted they would vote against that idea.Minority Leader Osei-Kyei Mensah-Bonsu has told Joy News limiting the number of flagbearer aspirants to two would further deepen the cracks within the party.Nana Addo Danquah Akuffo-Addo who contested the presidency on the ticket of the party has already expressed interest to lead the NPP to the 2012 election.The second runner-up in the congress election that saw Nana Addo represent the party, Alan Kyerematen, is also rumoured to be lacing his boots for what observers say would be another fierce race for the presidential candidacy.It is not clear what the final outcome of voting at the conference would be but political pundits advice party members do not allow their differences to generate more internal wrangling.Story by Fiifi Koomson/Myjoyonline.com
