The extension of the SIM card re-registration exercise to the end of September 2022 have been greeted with mixed reactions from some mobile phone subscribers.
While others welcomed the news and described it as an opportunity to ensure almost all subscribers register their SIM cards, some are pushing for more time to register.
Speaking to Joy Business, an entrepreneur called Flora said it's good the Communications and Digitalisation Minister had listen to the concerns of Ghanaians to extend the deadline.
She believes with the extension, many more subscribers would have the opportunity to visit various telecom firms to register their SIM cards.
"It's a good thing from the Ministry of Communication because as we speak now, a lot of people have not been able to register their SIM cards and due to the long queues, this could be a relief to a lot of Ghanaians”, She said.
However, to Helena who is a mobile money vendor, she bemoaned the Self-service app and the cost it comes with.
According to her, the ¢5 charge is expensive.
She also said that not every Ghanaian has a smartphone to download the self-service app, hence mobile operators should visit remote communities in Ghana to assist them in the registration process.
"Bringing the app will help in a way, but that's not the main problem. It’s expensive to pay for just registration", she opined.
However, Mr Fuad, a taxi driver indicated that it's good news for the extension of the SIM registration deadline, but for him this should not have a timeline.
"The deadline to me doesn't augur well, but I think it's ok that they have extended it. I am not happy though, but I have no option", he maintained.
Government yesterday July 31, 2022 announced an extension of the SIM card re-registration exercise that was started in 2022 and expected to end on July 31, 2022.
The Minister of Communications and Digitalisation, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful made the announcement at a press briefing.
The re-registration of SIM cards exercise has been fraught with hitches, long queues, delays and pain for most citizens, as one is required to re-register their mobile phone SIM to link it with their Ghana Card.
