The Minority in Parliament has described the blocking of SIM cards by the National Communications Authority (NCA) as unjust and unfair.
Speaking at a press conference in Parliament on Friday, Ranking Member on the Communications Committee of Parliament, A.B.A Fuseini noted that the act by the NCA is a breach of the fundamental human rights of subscribers whose SIM cards have been blocked.
“The NDC Minority Members on the Communications Committee regard the denial of the right to make calls and even interference in receiving calls through unsolicited messaging systems as unfair, unjust, and unwarranted breach of the fundamental human rights and freedom of the people.”
The Sagnarigu MP said the Ministry of Communication and Digitalisation (MoCD)has no business setting deadline for the SIM card re-registration since they do not have control over the Ghana Card issuance process.
According to the Minority, the recent chaos and confusion arising from the blockage of SIM cards, and people’s attempts to complete the registration process would have been prevented, had the NCA and the MoCD allowed the Mobile Network Operators to synchronize their data with the relevant agencies.
“We wish to call on the NCA through the Ministry, to immediately cancel the sanctions imposed on those who have not yet registered their SIM cards," A.B.A Fuseini stated.
They have also called on the government to efficiently resource the National Identification Authority to scale up their work.
Failure to call off the sanctions imposed on the subscribers by November 2022, the Minority said it will push for the withdrawal of the budget of the MoCD from the appropriation bill.
Some mobile network subscribers have said they are experiencing interruptions with their mobile phone services, following the sanctions imposed by the NCA.
The displeased users, who have been expressing their discomfort on social media, indicated that they are unable to make outgoing calls but can receive only incoming ones.
According to some, they received messages from their service providers that their SIM cards have been blocked ‘partially’ for two days due to their failure to re-register them using the Ghana Card.
