Residents of Sawua in the Ashanti Region have received a mechanized borehole facility to address an acute water challenge in the community.

The water project, built through the benevolence of Universal Hospitals Group, is to help solve the water needs of the community which hitherto depended on a stream.

The Universal Hospitals Group was contracted by the Ministry of Health to construct the Infectious Disease Center in the Sawua community.

The yet-to-be commissioned facility is one of several infectious treatment centers, constructed as part of the government's Covid-19 management plan.

Sawua, until now, relied on water from the Nkamforo and Oda streams as well as hand-dug wells.

But thanks to the Universal Hospitals Group, the community can now have a reliable water source.

Nana Sarfo Acheampong is Sawua Gyaasehene. He says the project will serve school children nearby.

“At first, we used to fetch water from streams. It was a worry drinking from those unwholesome sources. The construction of new hospital means more visitors would be visiting this community. Water would be one of the scarce commodities here. This water project will go a long way to cater for all those needs. The benefit would be enormous especially for school children in this community.” 

This is one of several gifts from the company to communities where it has been undertaking projects.

The Chief Executive, Frederick Amissah, told JoyNews that funding for the project came from the company’s profit, following the construction of the infectious disease center.

“Universal Hospitals Group constructed a containment center as part of the regional hospital project and as a socially responsive company, we decided to put this project here,” he said.

“Sawua township, we saw needed some support when it comes to water delivery system, so out of our good faith, we decided to plant a water system that can serve up to 250 households.

And where we are standing is strategically located in the school to help the school kids get good drinking water during classes hours .

So UHG, it's our strategy that wherever we find ourselves, we leave footprints not only technical and project footprints but social footprints everywhere we go.” He added.
