The Asokwa Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) has appealed to the Ministry of Health to relocate the Regional Hospital from Kumasi South to Sawua, saying the move would allow the current facility to be converted into a full-fledged Asokwa Municipal Hospital and expand healthcare access for residents.

Speaking on the development of healthcare infrastructure within the Municipality, the MCE said, “I’m still pursuing with the Ministry of Health to relocate the Regional Hospital from Kumasi South to Sawua so that we can convert that facility into the Asokwa Municipal Hospital and enhance access to quality healthcare.”

He also disclosed plans to establish additional healthcare facilities across the Municipality before the end of the year to improve service delivery.

The appeal comes amid the commissioning of the Asokwa Health Centre, which features a consulting room, pharmacy, male and female wards, delivery and lying-in wards for mothers and newborns.

The facility was initiated and funded by the Member of Parliament for Asokwa, Madam Patricia Appiagyei, Deputy Minority Leader in Parliament, through her share of the MPs’ Common Fund in response to community requests via local chiefs.

Madam Appiagyei noted, “It takes extreme caution for an MP to do anything meaningful from the Common Fund since it is meagre. I’ve purposed to spend it in providing each of the 12 Electoral Areas in Asokwa Constituency with a health facility befitting its status.”

The Chief of Asokwa, Nana Fe Bamoah, donated the land for the project free of charge, emphasising the importance of health facilities to community well-being. He said, “I freely gave out this land. I know this Health Centre will benefit not only residents of Asokwa but also those of surrounding communities such as Ahinsan and Atonsu.”

Nana Fe Bamoah also called for stronger collaboration between traditional leaders and political authorities for community development.

The Ashanti Regional Chief Nurse of the Ghana Health Service, Madam Ama Antwiwaa, urged staff and residents to maintain harmony and pledged the GHS’s commitment to regular maintenance of the facility to ensure continuous service delivery.

The Asokwa Health Centre is designed to operate 24 hours daily to meet the healthcare needs of the community and surrounding areas.
