Transformers of the Electricity Company of Ghana ( ECG) in the Tema region continue to remain a target for criminals as the power distributor lost over 20 transformers in 2022.
Prampram district alone recorded 18 incidents within the period.
Kpone Senior High School area, PS Global, Abbey Lighthouse and Tsopoli Heaven’s Gate under the district are the locations where the incidents took place.
Average of cost of transformers lost hovers around ¢69,000 with bigger ones costing even more.

Apart from Prampram, Afienya district also had three transformers attacked in December.
One fully functional transformer at White Estates near EMEF Estates serving customers under the Afienya district was lost.
Two other transformers being put up around Shai Hills area were also vandalized.
At Teye Kwame in the Krobo district, some miscreants made an attempt on one of the transformers.
According to the ECG, the Tema region over the last few years has recorded such criminal acts with little progress in identifying faceless persons behind it.

The suspects either destroy the transformer or make away with some parts or the whole equipment.
Apart from the situation draining ECG financially, it remains a big security threat as it often plunges affected areas into darkness.
The power distributor is therefore appealing to the public to remain watchful in areas where such equipment are sited.
Tema region of ECG has also noted that these incidents often happen in developing areas or new sites.
