The Air Force Officers’ Mess Tennis Club (AFOMTC) and the Accra Stadium Tennis Club on Saturday, March 11, held the 2023 annual Independence Tennis Carnival.
The event was held at the Air Force Officers’ Mess Tennis Club (AFOMTC) court in Accra and hosted other tennis clubs aside from the two.
The activity is a yearly event which is aimed at promoting the noble values of patriotism, social cohesion and the spirit of accommodation in an environment that is competitive and healthy.
According to the organisers of the annual carnival, they are looking to ensure that this becomes a major sporting and recreational activity in Ghana.
This year’s tournament was sponsored by Ecobank and Ghana Civil Aviation Authority as they also look to help with the development of tennis in the country.
Here are some results from the tournament:
- Ghana Armed Forces Sports Complex Tennis Club 7-6 Air Force Officers’ Mess Tennis Club
- GHACEM Tennis Club 2-7 Air Force Officers’ Mess Tennis Club
- Burma Camp Tennis Club 7-4 Air Force Officers’ Mess Tennis Club
- Stadium Tennis Club 7-5 TOR Tennis Club
Speaking at the event, Akunu Dake, who serves as a Patron for the Stadium Tennis Club explained the importance of marking the occasion.

"We had the first carnival which was attended by a number of tennis clubs last year. We gather here every year with the aim of socialising as tennis players but more importantly is to celebrate our independence anniversary and to assert ourselves as Ghanaians," he said.
"Sports is a very important aspect of our lives so we want to keep healthy. And as members of different tennis clubs, we use that also to solidarize and keep our clubs in shape and also share important issues related to welfare of our members."
In attendance at the event was Black Stars' all-time top-scorer, Asamoah Gyan, who is also a lover of the sport.
Other teams that were involved in the games were Ghana Arm Forces Sports Complex Tennis Club, GHACEM Tennis Club, TOR Tennis Club and Burna Camp Tennis Club.
