Former Member of Parliament for Daboya/Makarigu Constituency in the Savannah Region, Mahama Shaibu Obey has filed nomination with a vow to re-capture the seat from the New Patriotic Party’s Alhaji Mahama Asei for the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Addressing party supporters after going through the process, the private legal practitioner said the major reason he is contesting the primaries is to win back the seat he lost to the New Patriotic Party.
He called on party faithful to remain calm, united and run a decent internal campaign that will see the party more united to move into the main election in 2024.
"I'm very confident the NDC will win the seat in 2024 general elections because almost all projects started by NDC under John Mahama and my own good self, have not been completed yet, seven good years after they (NPP) won power,” he said.
He accused the NPP of winning the seat in the 2020 general elections through lies and monetisation of the system, only to later abandon almost all projects started by the NDC.
Mr. Mahama Shaibu Obey noted that, "Indeed, the NPP rode on the back of lies and monetised the whole system to win the elections, even on the day of voting there was money being distributed for peoples’ vote.
"Virtually all the projects that were started by us (NDC) are still hanging and only your (delegates') mandate will bring me and the party back to power to complete them and add more for the people of Daboya/Mankarigu Constituency," Lawyer Mahama Shaibu stated.
He also accused the NPP of making the lives of constituents worse, subjecting them to poverty, most especially the rural areas, saying “these are some of the major reasons why I am coming back. Politics is all about development and bettering the lives of the people.”
“I’m coming on board to push for all major projects to be completed and to help better the lives of the people. The constituents are suffering in all sectors. Businesses are collapsing and the socio-economic hardship keeps increasing," he added.
His nomination forms were received by the party constituency executives.
At the close of nominations, Wednesday, only two people had filed to contest in the primaries.
