Men have been advised to take a keen interest in knowing their partners’ menstrual cycles.
This will enable them to reshape their perceptions about menstruation and help them know when to be intimate with their partners.
Speaking on Joy Prime’s morning show, the Communications and Fundraising Lead for Advancing and Harnessing Opportunities for Youth (AHOY) Africa, Derek Tagoe said men should be involved in discussing matters about menstruation.
"For young men, you must take interest in the menstrual cycle of your partner. It’s very important. That’s where we will be able to reshape the thoughts and opinions around menstruation. If you don’t know the menstrual cycle of your partner, how are you even going to be intimate with her?" he asked.
He thinks that the expansion and men’s engagement in menstrual conversation erases the notion of uncleanliness about periods.
The communicator suggested men can go to the extent of purchasing sanitary pads for their girlfriends.
However, according to him, involvement and change starts with society, as it is one of the main change dynamics.
"If we begin to remove the veil that covers the whole conversation, it broadens the conversation," he said.
Men in Africa have huge economic power compared to women. Therefore, the engagement of men in menstrual issues, he said, will help put an end to menstrual poverty.
"If we do not involve them, the decision-makers themselves do not know what menstruation or menstrual hygiene is about. So, how then do you combat period poverty?" he quizzed.
He is of the view that the over 35 percent tax rate on sanitary pads is due to inadequate education and awareness about menstruation, particularly among men, which he said “is ridiculous.”
