It is least expected that Okomfo Anokye would break his allegiance to the Asante kingdom in pursuit of his ambitions.
But in a surprising turn of events, a school named after the revered Asante fetish priest, Okomfo Anokye Senior High School, has 'ditched loyalty' to the kingdom to kick out Asanteman SHS and make their first-time appearance at the national tournament of the National Science and Maths Quiz.
They beat them by a 4-point margin to secure a slot at the preliminary stage of the competition.
The school won the fierce contest with 33 points against Asanteman SHS’s 29 points.
The contest, which many had described as an Asante derby featured Asanteman SHS, Asare Bediako SHS, Juaben SHS and Okomfo Anokye SHS.
Many had predicted a nip-and-tuck contest between Juaben SHS and Asanteman SHS, given their experience in the national competition.

But the contestants of Okomfo Anokye SHS who were written off pulled an impressive surprise in the second round of the contest leading the duo by 16 points.
An overwhelming joy filled the hearts and faces of the students who chanted their school’s anthem “Okomfo Anokye!, wonders shall never end” after winning their contest.
As descendants of the great priest, the students say they will reclaim the ‘Golden stool’ (ie regional championship trophy) and be the real source of power for the Asantes.
