Ghanaian forward Felix Afena-Gyan has revealed he only found out he was being promoted to AS Roma's first team after receiving a phone call from his agent.
The 20-year-old moved to the first team at the club less than a year after joining them from Ghana-based EurAfrica.
After joining Roma, the player began his career in Italy with the youth team. Afena-Gyan made a blistering start to his Roma career by scoring and providing an assist on his debut for the under-18 side in a 5-0 thumping of Genoa.
He scored goals in his next two games for the team after that performance, and his performance was so remarkable that he was quickly promoted to Roma's Primavera under-19 team.
Later in October, Jose Mourinho invited the player to join the senior team and the player in an interview with Saddick Adams narrated how he got to know of his promotion to the senior team.
"It was a day before a game [for the U-19s]. My agent called me [and said] 'Hey Felix, if you score in this game, you are going to the first team," he recounted.
"I told him 'Then let's see after the game'. In that game, I scored two and that was when I got to the first team."
The youngster added that he was always motivated to work harder anytime Mourinho came around to watch the youth games.
"[Anytime he came around] I was working hard and he was nodding," he continued.
"After the training, he touched my shoulder and he said 'See you tomorrow.' I was very happy and my friends were also happy because I talked to Mourinho."
However, after the 2021/22 season. the player left Roma to join US Cremonese in search of more game time after failing to secure a spot in Roma's starting line-up.
