Grammy award-winning music sensation, Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu, widely known as Burna Boy, has responded to the recent 'new cat' label placed on him by fellow Afrobeats star, Davido.
In a recent interview, Davido referred to Burna Boy and other rising stars in the Nigerian music industry as the 'new cats,' which sparked controversy and accusations of disrespect towards Burna Boy's established career.
However, Burna Boy has taken the label in stride and sees it as a positive thing. He views being considered a 'new cat' as a sign of longevity and relevance in the industry.
During a conversation with Ebro Darden on the sidelines of his #AppleMusicLive performance at the Olympic Stadium in London, Burna Boy expressed his appreciation for the label, explaining, "That's a good thing, I love that! Because it keeps me young and means that I can do so much more. It stretches my lifespan. I'm living longer than I thought I would, than I even planned to"
Known for his Afro fusion style, Burna Boy aims to break barriers and showcase that music is not confined to a single genre. He feels blessed to have the chance to display his versatility rather than being limited to just one musical style.
To achieve this, Burna Boy highlighted the importance of having his family involved in running his music business, which has streamlined operations and brought wisdom to the forefront.
Apart from his remarkable accomplishments as the most-streamed Nigerian artist on Apple Music worldwide and in Nigeria, Burna Boy continues to hone his music craftsmanship.
He shared his latest musical adventures - learning to play the guitar while perfecting his saxophone and piano skills. This musical prodigy isn't resting on his laurels.
With his 2019 album, 'African Giant,' breaking records for first-day and first-week streams worldwide, and his 2022 LP, 'Love, Damini', topping charts in 70 countries, Burna Boy continues to solidify his position as a global music heavyweight.
Through his musical journey and commitment to versatility, he aims to break boundaries and show the world the power of music beyond genres.
His monumental achievements and continuous pursuit of musical growth make him an exceptional force in the Nigerian and global music scene.
