The President of the Forum of Kings and Traditional Leaders of Africa, Torgbuigah Adzonugaga Amenya Fiti V, has noted with worry that the situation in Niger if not handled well, may escalate and have more negative effects on the whole African continent.
Torgbuigah Fiti who is the Daho (Paramount chief) of the Aflao Traditional Area made the comment at a press conference organised by the Forum of Kings and Traditional Leaders of Africa in Aflao.
He noted that with some countries considering sending troops to Niger to help restore constitutional rule, the already tense situation could get worse and lead to regrettable outcomes.
He noted that the possibility of the military from the various countries teaming up with their colleagues in Niger for similar actions to be replicated in their respective countries is highly possible due to some level of understanding and connection which naturally exists between military officers worldwide.
''Soldiers always have some kind of language they speak and understand whenever they meet or are together, and the tendencies of these soldiers rather collaborating with their colleagues in Niger and then plan coups in their respective countries is highly possible and we must by all means avoid military interventions to avoid calamities in our countries,'' he warned.
Torgbuigah Fiti noted that it is also highly dangerous at this point to risk the lives of military officers and the good people of the countries whose leaders are contemplating a military intervention in Niger.
He said with the current posture of the Niger junta leaders and their counterparts from Mali and Burkina Faso, many lives will be lost as a result of the military intervention.
Torgbuiga Fiti appealed passionately to leaders of the ECOWAS countries contemplating military intervention to rather resort to diplomatic alternatives to resolving the impasse to avoid the effects of a military intervention.
He also appealed to the Nigerien junta leaders to give peace and unity a chance for a better Africa.
