The National Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has criticised former Trades Minister, Alan Kyerematen over his decision to run for president as an independent candidate.
Speaking on Twitter spaces on Monday, Sammy Gyamfi questioned Mr Kyerematen's ability to run the nation given that, as Minister of Trades and Industry, he failed to put a sugar factory into operation.
According to him, during Mr Kyeremateng’s tenure as minister, the country recorded a drastic decline in the growth of the manufacturing sector from 7.9 % in 2016 to 4.5% in 2023.
“We gave you an important sector – the Ministry of Trade and Industry and common sugar factory you couldn’t operationalise after six years of handling that Ministry and you want us to give you an entire country to manage?” he asked.
Mr Kyerematen announced his decision to break away from the NPP with immediate effect to contest in the 2024 election as an independent presidential candidate.
He explained that his "decision to contest as an Independent Candidate will not destroy the Party, but instead provide the Party an opportunity to participate in a Government of National Unity in the future, and avoid the risk of going into opposition with no dividends, in what arguably will be a difficult general election in 2024."
But Mr Gyamfi still believes his breakaway will not bring about any change.
This, he explained is because Mr Kyerematen has been an accomplice to all the injustice meted out to Ghanaians under the Akufo-Addo administration.
“He has been an active part of everything that this government has done,” he added.
He asserts that Mr. Kyerematen lacks the credibility and trust needed to lead the nation out of the economic quagmire it is currently in.
“Now that you have realised that the NPP that you have always been a part of is discredited, you want to jump ship, play Pontius Pilate, wash your hands clean and say I am no longer part of these people I was seeking to lead a few weeks ago."
“Now, I am a new person – the Messiah you have been looking for. And so the few young people who are tired of the NPP and NDC should see you as their answer or their solution? Definitely No!” he said.
