Over hundred women traders at the Tema Community One market in the Greater Accra region have benefited from a free breast cancer screening exercise.
The gesture by ASA Savings and Loans Limited, was part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) to promote the well-being of women and also increase breast cancer awareness in the area.
The screening, which aims at helping women to know their status was boosted by the support of the medical team from Tema Polyclinic.
Out of the 126 women screened, ten were referred to seek further examination.
Among the 10 women, two had visible breast lump and were quickly referred for mammogram, which is an x-ray picture of the breast to check for breast cancer in women who have no signs or symptoms of the disease.
This type of mammogram is called a screening mammogram, which usually involve two or more x-ray pictures, or images, of each breast.
Betty Ackon, a public health nurse in-charge at the Tema Polyclinic outlined breast cancer risk factors to be smoking, excessive alcohol intake, late delivery, early and late menopause.
She thus urged women to seek early treatment upon detecting symptoms of breast cancer.
She added that breast cancer remains a common cancer affecting women in their reproductive age in Ghana, urging them take to their health issues seriously.

The Tema Community 1 Branch Manager of ASA, Susuana Sam said more resources are being dedicated to supporting breast cancer awareness campaigns to save lives.
