The People’s National Convention (PNC) today, December 31, marked the 43rd anniversary of the overthrow of President Dr Hilla Limann of the Third Republic of Ghana.
According to the party, the People’s National Party (PNP), a democratically-elected government, was overthrown by the PNDC government through a military coup.
In a press statement signed and issued by the General Secretary of PNC, Janet Asana Nbla, on Sunday said Dr Limann, who ruled for 27 months, believed in moral values and condemned selfishness, greed and corruption which he considered the greatest “social evil.”
This, the party stated is unjust how Dr. Limann was treated, considering his principles.
“Interestingly, the PNDC government that removed him from office on allegations of corruption never found any evidence against President Hilla Limann or his appointees, or immediate family members acquiring wealth at the expense of the taxpayers,” the party said.
The PNC in the statement further clarified that the coup, plotted in 1981, which saw the overthrow of Dr. Limann, resulted in a decline in the quality of life for Ghanaians and brought immense hardship to the entire country.
The party emphasised that Ghanaians lost their “dignity and sense of importance due to this coup.”
The PNC, therefore, calls on Ghanaians to join in celebrating the remarkable and selfless leadership of Dr. Limann.
“His exemplary life must inspire and serve as a form of education to the younger generation about the true nature of politics as a means to serve and not to be served.
“We should strive to exemplify the values exhibited by Dr Limann, ensuring our pursuit of political power is not driven by selfish motives but rather by a genuine desire to uplift the pride and well-being of Ghanaians,” the statement further said.
The party added that “A future PNC government would introduce 'Limannism' as a subject at all levels of education to help instil in the younger generation principles of selflessness, morality, and compassion.
"It will require the PNC to serve as the Biblical David to confront and eliminate the Goliath (corruption) from this country.”
