The Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) has disclosed that the water scarcity in the Tamale community has intensified as a result of the ongoing harmattan weather phenomenon in the northern region of the country.
Stanley Martey, the Director of Communications at the Ghana Water Limited (GWL), stated that the adverse weather conditions have caused the Nawuni River to dry up, exacerbating the water shortage.
Mr Martey primarily attributed the problem to the dry weather conditions.
“Around this time of the year, we are in the dry season, and the levels of the Nawuni River, where we fetch water for treatment, have gone down.
"When the levels go down, they win alluvial sand, which destroys the quality of the raw water. So, it becomes difficult for us to get water with low turbidity to treat.”
Member of Parliament for Tamale South, Haruna Iddrisu on Tuesday, February 13, demanded urgent action to address the acute water shortages in the Tamale Metropolis.
In a brief statement on the floor of the House on Wednesday, the former Minority Leader explained that the challenge has put hospitals and schools, especially in Tamale, under significant stress.
He called for a resolution to bring some relief to the members of the community.
Bodi MP, Samson Ahi also urged the National Security and the Ministry for Sanitation and Water Resources to move in with water tankers to serve the community.
