The Ghana women's 4x100m relay team clinched a bronze medal at the ongoing African Games on a successive Day 3 of the track and field events of the ongoing African Games in Accra.
The quartet of Mary Boakye, Janet Mensah, Doris Mensah and Hor Halutie finished 3rd in 44.21s, behind winners Nigeria, and Liberia.
The Ghanaians had won their heats in the build up to the final, and the race was largely built up to be a three-way affair between the three West African nations.
And it played out exactly as predicted, with Nigeria drafting in the superlative Tobi Amusan for the anchor leg.
Amusan, the world record holder in the women's 100m hurdles, had successfully defended her title, just an hour before the relay race, but she showed no sign of fatigue as she anchored Nigeria home to successfully defend the title they won five years ago in Rabat.
After a great start from Boakye, who had made the individual 100m final, Janet Mensah ran a superb back straight before Doris negotiated a tricky 3rd leg. And yet, by the time Hor Halutie got the baton, the Ghanaians were already trailing the Nigerians.
With Amusan out on the front by herself, Halutie and Kyree Josephine of Liberia went into a tight race for second, and in the end, the Liberian just held off the challenge to take silver ahead of the Ghanaians.
It's redemption for Ghana, who finished last in the event at the last African Games in Rabat, following a baton change mix up.
