The Executive Director of the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA), Sulemana Braimah, says people have lost patriotism and passion for the nation and are now focused on personal gain, prioritising immediate financial rewards over the long-term future of the country.
Speaking on JoyNews' AM Show on April 19, 2024, he emphasised the need for citizens to rekindle their sense of patriotism and commitment to building a better future for Ghana.
“It is not about the values of patriotism and the values of letting us preserve the future. The problem starts at the top, with the leadership of the country, from the president to the vice president, to the people who are holding positions as ministers to director-generals and so on and so forth, and it cascades all the way down.
“So, I do not know. What we have missed as a country is the fact that over the years, maybe for the past twenty or so years, we have had leaders who basically come to power and are not interested in the future of this country. It is all about letting us make money so we can win the election”.
Mr Braimah further stated that this situation has led to politicians establishing media houses solely to maintain their grip on power.
He said people employed in these media houses often have no training in journalism, further exacerbating the problem.
“It's all about politics. It is actually not politics; it is all about money-making. It is about power and money-making and so for me, having a broadcasting law may help but just like all other sectors talk about corruption, talk about judiciary, talk about our parliament.
“Just as it is happening everyday it is not the law because in some of the issues, there are laws, if it were to be about laws maybe corruption, the way we see it and the scales at which we are seeing it, would not have been the case. It is about the individual. We the citizens and the extent to which we are prepared to do the right thing, the extent to which leaders are committed to preserving the future of this country,” he said.
