The Youth Resource Centres that the Akufo-Addo administration started in 2018 to signify interest in youth and sports development have been left to rot.
Credible sources within the National Youth Authority (NYA) have attributed the situation to unreleased quarterly allocations from the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF) since late 2022, resulting in the Authority’s inability to fulfill its contractual obligations.
The ten projects are cited at Wa - Upper West Region, Navrongo - Upper East, Yendi - Northern Region, Dorma Ahenkro - Bono Region, and Nyinehin in Ashanti.
The rest are Axim in the Western region, Dunkwa-on-Offin in the Central Region, and North Kaneshie in the Greater Accra Region.
The remaining two at Ho-Volta Region and Koforidua in the Eastern Region were hurriedly put in a somewhat usable state for hosting the country's independence anniversary in 2023 and 2024 respectively.
The sorry state of affairs and the clear wastage of the country’s scarce resources are solely attributable to the precarious financial position of the NYA.
How any subvented state institution can exist and be expected to perform its function under law when no financial releases are made to it for close to two years beats my imagination.
President Akufo-Addo and Dr Bawumia do not appear to be walking the talk when it comes to the development of the youth of this country. The National Youth Policy and its implementation are gathering dust, not being implemented, while the multi-million cedi projects started by the NYA are left to rot.
