The police in Dambai have arrested the owner of the boat involved in a tragic accident on the River Oti on Wednesday, June 12.
The incident resulted in the drowning of three people, while seven others were rescued after the boat capsized due to windy conditions.
Emmanuel Atali, the Assembly Member for the Dambai Lakeside Electoral Area, confirmed the arrest in a media interview.
He stated that the boat owner is currently in custody as investigations into the incident continue.
“We are still looking for the dead body but the police have arrested the boat operator, who was driving the boat when the incident happened."
“As I am speaking, people are still looking for the dead body. They have to let him [the boat operator] write his statement because he is the one who knows where the accident happened," he said.
The accident occurred during adverse weather conditions, causing the boat to overturn.
Authorities are working to determine the exact cause of the accident and ensure accountability.
Residents have expressed concern over the safety measures in place for river transportation, highlighting the need for stricter regulations and enforcement to prevent future tragedies.
