A massive gridlock engulfed the Ablekuma-Awoshie road in Accra on Monday morning when frustrated residents took to the streets, blocking traffic in protest of faulty traffic lights.
The residents, who have lamented the authorities’ neglect, staged a spontaneous blockade, using logs, stones, and other materials to shut down the road.
The protest led to a massive traffic jam, with cars and buses stranded for hours, causing inconvenience to commuters.
The traffic lights at the intersection of Ablekuma-Awoshie road have been malfunctioning for weeks, leading to frequent accidents and gridlocks.
Despite series of appeals and petitions to have it fix, nothing has been done about the situation.
The Police have been notified to clear the blockade and restore order.
However, the residents remained resolute, demanding that the traffic lights be fixed before they would lift the blockade.
Commuters are advised to use alternative routes to avoid the congestion.
