The Apostolic Fathers of Ghana, a group of pioneering leaders of the Charismatic movement in the country, have called for a temporary ban on illegal mining, also known as galamsey due to its devastating impact on the environment and citizens' livelihoods.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the Apostolic Fathers expressed deep concern over the alarming escalation of galamsey, which has resulted in the pollution of rivers and streams, deforestation, and the destruction of farmlands, making drinking water unsafe and fertile lands unusable for farming.
The Apostolic Fathers urged all those involved in the illegal activity, including politicians, traditional leaders, and foreign nationals, to immediately stop their harmful actions and embrace the long-term interests of the nation and future generations.
They also condemned those in positions of influence who have turned a blind eye to the issue, driven by selfish interests and personal gain.
They urged them to reflect on their actions and consider the long-term consequences of their inaction.
The group emphasised that Ghana cannot afford to let greed eclipse the well-being of its citizens.
In view of that it called for a temporary ban on galamsey to mitigate its far-reaching consequences, including environmental disaster, food insecurity, and health crises.
