President Nana Akufo-Addo is set to deliver his final address at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on Wednesday, September 25, before leaving office.
His speech will focus on the theme, “Leaving no one behind: Acting together for the advancement of peace, sustainable development, and human dignity for present and future generations.”
The 79th session of the UNGA is taking place at the UN headquarters in New York City, USA, from 21 to September 27.
As part of his engagements, President Akufo-Addo participated in the opening ceremony of the “Summit of the Future: Multilateral Solutions for a Better Tomorrow” on Sunday, 22nd September.
During the summit, he addressed the plenary meeting and held bilateral talks with leaders including the President of Finland, the Crown Prince of Kuwait, and the Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis.
The president also interacted with Ghanaian international civil servants working at the UN and participated in a high-level moment to honour victims of slavery at the Ark of Return monument at the UN headquarters.
Additionally, he paid a courtesy call to the UN Secretary-General, António Guterres.

On 23rd September, President Akufo-Addo received the prestigious Atlantic Council Global Citizen Award, alongside Kyriakos Mitsotakis, Prime Minister of Greece; Giorgia Meloni, President of the Council of Ministers of Italy; and Miky Lee, Vice Chairwoman of CJ Group.
On 24th September, President Akufo-Addo will attend the opening of the General Debate of the 79th UNGA session, where UN Secretary-General António Guterres and U.S. President Joe Biden are set to speak.
President Akufo-Addo will also participate in a side event on reparations alongside Barbados Prime Minister Mia Mottley and Ghana’s Attorney General, Godfred Yeboah Dame.
Later in the week, the president will launch the investment case for the International Fund for Public Interest Media (IFPIM) and attend the 2nd edition of the Global Africa Forum (GAF).
He will also be hosted by the W.E.B. Du Bois Museum Foundation for a luncheon on 26th September and attend the MIPAD Achievement Awards and the launch of Liberia’s campaign for UN Security Council membership.
President Akufo-Addo will conclude his official visit to the United States and return to Ghana on Friday, 27th September 2024.
