As Ghana prepares for its upcoming general election in December, stakeholders are advocating for the safety of media houses and practitioners.
During a public lecture held in Accra on October 23, 2024, in memory of the late lawyer Akoto Ampaw, Professor Dodzi Tsikata, a distinguished researcher from the University of London, expressed deep concern over the increasing attacks on media houses and journalists across the country.
"Attacks on media personnel by political party operatives have become increasingly rampant and alarming; such actions must be thoroughly condemned and resisted," she said.
Professor Tsikata emphasised that the media continues to address critical issues affecting the nation, stressing the importance of allowing journalists to operate without fear or intimidation.
According to the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA), there have been 14 reported cases of attacks on journalists and media organisations over the past decade, yet only one has been resolved.
