The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has stated that it will not accept any automatic rearrangement of positions on the ballot in the wake of the passing of Akua Donkor, founder of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP).
Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, the NDC’s Director of Elections and IT, expressed the party’s position in a Facebook post on Tuesday, October 29.
His comments came after the Ghana Freedom Party’s leader, Akua Donkor, passed away at Ridge Hospital in Accra on Monday, October 28.
Her death has raised questions about the organisation of the upcoming ballot, as the GFP had already secured a position in the line-up for the 2024 general election.
In response to the situation, the Electoral Commission (EC) has directed the immediate halt of ballot paper printing to address the changes stemming from Madam Donkor’s death.
Additionally, the EC has called on the GFP to nominate a new candidate to replace the late Donkor on the ballot.
However, the NDC is cautioning against any potential reshuffling of the ballot positions.
The party emphasises that it expects the EC to uphold the current order of political parties on the ballot, as any automatic rearrangement could disrupt the integrity and fairness of the electoral process.
"We shall not accept automatic re-arrangement of positions on the ballot. Just note it and keep it holy," Dr Omane Boamah posted.
