The Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has accused the government of failing to honour its promises to the Independent Power Producers (IPPs).
According to Mr Ablakwa, the government had previously negotiated with the IPPs, agreeing to settle its indebtedness over a four-year period, however, the government has not honoured its part of this agreement.
Speaking on Joy FM’s Morning Show on Thursday, November 21, during a discussion on the impending shutdown of three IPPs due to outstanding debts, he expressed his frustration with the government’s handling of the situation.
Mr Ablakwa attributed what he described as current energy crisis to the mismanagement of the country’s economy by the government, accusing it of misdirecting resources into dubious deals.
He alleged that $12 million meant for the Pwalugu Tomato Factory project and another $12 million under the Egyapa Royalties deal had gone unaccounted for, saying these are examples of financial mismanagement and corruption under the Nana Addo administration.
He stated, “Blatant corruption, thievery—where we are now, there is a situation where these resources have been directed to corruption. If it was used to pay the IPPs, we would not be in this current situation.”
He said former President John Dramani Mahama had fixed DUMSOR even though power supply inadequacies had been a problem since 1998.
He also pointed out that under President Mahama, over 1,200 megawatts were added to the country’s power generation capacity.
