The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is grappling with major setbacks in the 2024 parliamentary elections, as several prominent Members of Parliament lose their seats to the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
These losses mark a significant political shift, with the NDC gaining momentum in key constituencies.
Bye bye NPP MPs
One of the most notable defeats came in Adansi Asokwa, where long-serving MP KT Hammond was unseated by the NDC’s Godwin Animli Dorgbadzi Dorani.
Mr Hammond secured 13,275 votes, falling short of Dorani’s 14,229. Mensah Abraham Justice of the Convention People’s Party (CPP) garnered just 346 votes.
In Okaikwei South, Dakoa Newman joined the list of NPP casualties, while Ursula Owusu-Ekuful of Ablekuma West saw a disappointing outcome, managing only 26,575 votes.
The NDC’s Rev. Kweku Addo claimed victory in Ablekuma West with 31,866 votes.
The Ayawaso Central seat also flipped to the NDC, as Abdul Rauf Tongym Tubazu defeated incumbent Henry Quartey.
Mr Tubazu secured 29,755 votes to Quartey’s 23,345. Charles Kwame Adams of the National Democratic Party (NDP) received a meagre 163 votes out of the total 53,550 cast, with 287 ballots rejected.
Sylvester Tetteh, the MP for Bortianor Ngleshie Amanfro, lost his seat to Okle Felix Akwetey of the NDC.
Tetteh received 27,888 votes, while Akwetey won with a commanding 37,473 votes.
In Dormaa East, NPP incumbent Twum Barima was narrowly defeated by the NDC’s Rachel Owusuaa. Barima polled 12,050 votes compared to Owusuaa’s 12,310.
Take a seat NDC
The NDC’s strong showing in these critical constituencies signals growing support and presents significant challenges for the NPP.
With the NDC flipping key seats, the election results reflect an evolving political landscape and highlight the need for the NPP to reassess its strategies moving forward.
This wave of losses for the NPP underscores the NDC’s growing influence and reshapes the dynamics of Ghana’s political scene ahead of the next parliamentary session.
