The Affirmative Action Law Coalition has expressed deep concern over the failure of both the incumbent and incoming governments to comply with gender quotas stipulated in the Affirmative Action (Gender Equity) Act, 2024 (Act 1121).
In a press release, the Coalition criticised the lack of female representation in the recently inaugurated Transition Team and anti-corruption team.
The Coalition stated that Section 14 of the Affirmative Action (Gender Equity) Act mandates that at least 30 per cent of all presidential appointments must comprise women.
However, it said the composition of the 23-member joint transition team includes only four women, representing just 16 per cent of the total—a figure that falls far short of the legal requirement.
The Coalition also raised concerns about the absence of women in the newly announced anti-corruption team, established by the incoming government.
“This blatant disregard for gender equity in decision-making processes is concerning and goes against the principles of gender equity and inclusivity that the Affirmative Action (Gender Equity) Act aims to promote," part of the statement read.
The Coalition therefore urged both administrations to address these shortcomings urgently by ensuring compliance with the legally mandated quotas.
“It is imperative that the government sets a positive example for gender equality and diversity in leadership positions,” the statement added.
