Special aide and spokesperson for John Mahama’s campaign in 2024, Joyce Mogtari Bawah has criticized the 2024 National Honours and Awards ceremony, describing it as a disregard for the struggles of ordinary Ghanaians.
Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile with Samson Lardy on Saturday, January 4, she expressed disappointment with the timing and some of the recipients of the awards.
“These awards were a slap in the face of the good people of Ghana,” Madam Bawah said. “When the economy is struggling, the cedi is 17 to the dollar, and people are starving, this isn’t the time to honour government appointees with accolades.”
She noted that past awards ceremonies had attracted more public enthusiasm, with recipients proudly celebrating. However, she observed a lack of excitement this time, suggesting public discontent with the process and its symbolism.
Madam Bawah called for a more transparent and voluntary approach to the awards process, allowing recipients to decide whether to accept them. “People should be informed in advance and given the choice to accept or decline. Personally, I wouldn’t have wanted to be on that list,” she added.
She also questioned the credibility of some awardees, referencing controversial figures and past events. “Let’s be honest about our history and actions. For me, these awards mean nothing. True rewards come from God,” she stated.
