Former Asante Akyem North MP, Andy Kwame Appiah-Kubi, has urged President John Dramani Mahama to reconsider his pledge of limiting the number of ministers to 60, should the demands of governance require otherwise.
In an interview on TV3 on January 11, he acknowledged the appeal of a smaller cabinet but emphasized that governance should take priority over rigid adherence to campaign promises.
He stated, “Let Mr. Mahama reflect on his campaign message as a presidential candidate, but now as President, he must think pragmatically. If the country’s needs necessitate more ministers, he should do what is best for the nation.”
Mr Appiah-Kubi drew a parallel to former President John Agyekum Kufuor, who, after taking office, adjusted some of his campaign promises when faced with the complexities of governance.
He encouraged Ghanaians to be open to such flexibility in leadership, understanding that real-world challenges may require revisiting prior commitments.
While advocating for a lean government to help curb state expenditure, Appiah-Kubi stressed that the national interest should always outweigh the need to strictly adhere to campaign pledges.
“A lean government is a policy I respect, but the national interest should take precedence,” he concluded.
