President John Dramani Mahama has pledged to ensure the swift completion and operationalisation of the Sewua Hospital in the Ashanti Region.
Speaking during the first Akwasidae celebration of the year at the Manhyia Palace on Sunday, 19th January, the President outlined plans to address the hospital’s pressing infrastructural needs and operational delays.
In his address, President Mahama underscored the critical role of the 250-bed facility in alleviating the immense pressure on the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH).
As one of the largest healthcare institutions in the region, KATH caters to patients from Ashanti and neighbouring areas but is currently overstretched and in dire need of infrastructural upgrades.
“The Sewua Hospital is not operational because it lacks electricity, water, and an accessible road network,” President Mahama stated. “I wish to assure you that we will tackle these issues immediately, enabling the hospital to open its doors and ease the burden on Komfo Anokye.”
He added that this would create an opportunity to undertake essential renovations at KATH without disrupting its operations.
President Mahama highlighted the broader implications of completing the Sewua Hospital, explaining that relocating patients to the new facility would provide much-needed breathing space for KATH.
“It is difficult to carry out renovations at Komfo Anokye when the hospital is working at full capacity,” he noted, emphasising the urgency of addressing the challenges at both hospitals to improve healthcare delivery in the region.
Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo had commissioned the hospital before leaving office, a move criticised by the project’s contractor, Euroget De-Invest S.A., who maintained that the facility was not ready for use.
