The nominee for Gender, Children, and Social Protection Ministry, Agnes Naa Momo Laretey, says when she is given the nod, she will prioritise embedding Ghanaian family values into the country’s educational curriculum.
According to the Krowor Member of Parliament (MP), she would prioritise the inclusion of these cultural and family values as a fundamental part of the education system.
She explained that integrating such values from an early age would help the younger generation better understand and uphold the societal norms cherished by Ghanaians.
“It is essential to ensure that our children are taught these values right from the beginning,” she emphasised during her appearance at the vetting committee on Wednesday, adding that this approach would provide a sustainable foundation alongside legal measures.
Her comments come amid the ongoing national discussion around the controversial Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, also known as the anti-gay bill.
This bill, when passed into law will criminalise activities perceived to promote LGBTQ+ rights in Ghana and has sparked significant public debate. While many Ghanaians, including traditional leaders and religious groups, strongly support the bill as a means to protect the country’s cultural and moral fabric, it has also faced criticism from international human rights organisations.
The incoming Gender minister's statement aligns with this wider conversation about preserving Ghanaian family values, which continue to shape discussions on social policies.
