The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has condemned the recent clash between illegal miners and the military over the AngloGold Ashanti concession in Obuasi, which resulted in the loss of nine lives.
Speaking after being briefed on the incident by Mangers of AngloGold Ashanti at the Manhyia Palace, the Asantehene expressed his deep concern and disappointment over the incident, stating that the change of government should not be seen as an opportunity for people to misbehave and engage in lawless activities.
"Doing illegal mining should not be encouraged by anybody not even the government. And the change in government should give people the opportunity to misbehave" the Asantehene said.
"We live in a societywhere the law works and therefore I don't think this government will let this happen."
The Asantehene's comments come after a violent confrontation between the military and a group of illegal miners at the AngloGold Ashanti concession in Obuasi.
The incident, resulted in the deaths of nine people, with several others injured.
