The 2024 Weightlifter of the Year at the 49th Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) Awards, Winnifred Ntumi, has expressed her ambition to compete at the Olympics.
Ntumi first gained prominence at the 2019 African Games in Rabat, Morocco, where she clinched three bronze medals in the women’s 45kg events.
She continued her rise with an impressive performance at the 2023 African Games, winning two silver medals and a gold in the overall 49kg category while representing Ghana in the Snatch and Clean and Jerk events.
Speaking on JoySports’ SportsLink, the 21-year-old revealed that competing on the Olympic stage remains her ultimate goal.
"When I went to Birmingham in 2022, the experience was amazing. I felt like I could do more than I’m doing now," she said.
"When I looked at the others, I knew I could do better than them, but because they had better support, I had to just go with the flow.
"I haven’t been to the Olympics yet, but it’s my dream and aim to get to that stage. Even though the Commonwealth Games and World Championships are big platforms, the Olympics is on another level."
