A former General Secretary of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA), and MP for Lambussie Constituency in the Upper West Region, Prof Titus Kofi Beyuo, has called for the enactment of a law to improve emergency care systems in the country.
His call follows the tragic death of a fan during Kotoko’s Ghana Premier League match against Nsoatreman on Sunday, 2nd February 2025, at the Nana Kromansah Park in Nsoatre.
Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show, Prof Beyuo emphasised the importance of establishing a legal framework that aligns with global best practices in emergency response.
“Everything starts with the law,” he said, adding that Ghana needs a structure that reflects current global standards. “This has been successfully implemented elsewhere in the world, so we must look at those models and adapt them to suit our own context.”
He further proposed a review of existing laws to ensure better regulation of emergency care and suggested that standard operating procedures be made public, allowing the public to actively monitor their enforcement.
“In the event of medical emergencies, there should be a law that clearly defines the roles of everyone involved,” he remarked.
He also recommended that healthcare facilities be legally required to conduct regular emergency drills and simulations to ensure readiness in critical situations.
He is currently collaborating with legal experts to determine whether existing laws need to be amended or whether new legislation should be introduced to address these issues and improve the country’s emergency response system.
Through these efforts, Prof Beyuo hopes to improve emergency preparedness across the country, preventing further tragedies like the one witnessed at Nsoatreman.
