President John Evans Atta Mills has arrived in the Egyptian resort city of Sharm el Sheikh for the 15th summit of Heads of State and Governments of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM).
A press statement signed by James Agyenim-Boateng, Deputy Minister for Information, said the President was accompanied by his advisor on Foreign Affairs, Ambassador James Victor Gbeho; Foreign Minister, Hon. Alhaji Mohammed Mumuni and his Press Secretary and Spokesperson, Mahama Ayariga.
“Ahead of addressing the over 143 member body tomorrow, President Mills says he expects the meeting to examine how NAM member countries can protect themselves against the current global crisis as well as sharing views on the way forward.”
The NAM was created and founded amidst the period of the collapse of the colonial system and the beginning of independence movements of people of Africa, Latin America and other regions of the world at the height of the Cold War. During the early days of the Movement, its actions were a key factor in the decolonisation efforts, which later led to the realisation of freedom and independence by many countries and peoples, and to the founding of new sovereign States. Throughout its history, the Movement of Non-Aligned Countries has played a fundamental role in the preservation of world peace and security.
