The Ghana Weightlifting Federation commissioned its newly renovated national training centre on Wednesday, February 12, at the Accra Sports Stadium.
The upgraded facility, now outfitted with modern changing rooms, restrooms, and a full suite of training equipment, promises to provide athletes and coaches with a space dedicated to fostering excellence and enhancing performance.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Federation President and Member of Parliament, Jerry Ahmed Shaib, emphasized the importance of upgrading the facility to improve Ghana’s weightlifting team’s chances of winning gold at international competitions.
“As many of you know, this gym has not been in operation for close to a year, as it underwent much-needed renovation to upgrade this facility and equip the place for current use,” he said.
“Today, we’re here not just for the reopening of the physical space but to celebrate the vision and mission of growth, progress, and success for the sport of weightlifting in Ghana.”
He further reaffirmed the federation’s commitment to providing a safe environment for athletes.
“This facility is a testament to our commitment towards developing weightlifting in Ghana. As we gather here today, I’m reminded of the tremendous work we have done in weightlifting over the years.”
The Minister for Sports and Recreation and Member of Parliament, Hon. Kofi Adams, who made his first official appearance at a sports event after being vetted and approved, highlighted the need to invest in and prioritize lesser-known sports, including weightlifting.
“It is an interesting coincidence that this is the first official event I have been privileged to be part of,” he said.
Other dignitaries who graced the ceremony included Ghana Olympic Committee Chairman, Mr. Ben Nunoo Mensah.
