The Ghana Police Service is set to investigate the violent clashes that marred Sunday's Division One League match between Elmina Sharks and Swedru All Blacks.
Sources have told JoySports that the office of the Central Regional Police Commander has already dispatched a team to gather evidence from the incident, with suspects already identified.
In keeping with standard procedure, the twenty police officers on duty at the Dr. Nduom Sports Complex would be the first point of call in gathering intelligence on what is the latest incident of football hooliganism.
Sunday's fight broke out after players and fans of Elmina Sharks attacked referee Eso Doh Morrison after he awarded a controversial penalty to Swedru All Blacks at the Dr. Nduom Sports Complex in Elmina.
Footage from the match shows that referee Morrison initially did not whistle for a penalty after two players collided in the Sharks penalty area.
However, after medics attended to the players, the referee pointed to the spot, indicating a penalty to the away team.
The decision sparked protests among players, officials, and fans of Elmina Sharks.
Despite the protests, the decision was upheld and the penalty was subsequently converted.
At full-time, the match referee was confronted by three well-built fans while he was about to enter the tunnel leading to the dressing room.
While the officers could isolate him with the help of a yet-to-be-identified man, some Elmina Sharks players still got to him.
In a video that has since gone viral, Elmina Sharks player Jay Asamoah Kola, is seen attempting to hit referee Morrison with a stone he picked from the ground.
Although he swung wildly, a combination of the unidentified individual and one police officer was able to stop him from making clean contact with Morrison's head.
Sunday's unfortunate incident is the latest in football hooliganism following the fatal stabbing of Francis ''Nana Pooley'' Frimpong, a fan of Asante Kotoko at a Ghana Premier League match two weeks ago.
