A Legacy Stained by Crime
Amanful is one of the oldest communities in the Western Region, rich in tradition and history. However, within this historic town lies Main Spain, a name that has become synonymous with crime, drug peddling, and theft.
For years, Main Spain has been labelled as a hub for illegal activities. It is known as a haven for drug users and dealers, trafficking marijuana, cocaine, and other illicit substances.
The area’s reputation extends beyond Amanful, making it the go-to place for stolen goods. If an item is stolen in Takoradi, there is a high chance it will end up in Main Spain.

Those who dare to search for their lost belongings often find them there, but retrieval usually comes at a price—unless they have strong local connections.
Despite its notoriety, Main Spain operates by its own unwritten rules. Strangers and outsiders often fall victim to theft, but the long-time residents of Amanful are mostly left untouched.
A Cultural Infamy
The impact of Main Spain on Takoradi’s social landscape is so significant that it has even been referenced in music. Ghanaian musician Kofi Kinaata, in his song Made in Tadi, alluded to the area’s illegal dealings, implying that during the Christmas season, marijuana became scarce due to high demand.
The lyrics, though lighthearted, reflect a harsh reality: Main Spain’s identity is deeply tied to crime, and even the authorities seem to have accepted it as an unavoidable truth.
A Chief’s Vision for Change
Determined to rewrite Amanful’s story, Nana Obo Atta Kojo Essuon III, the newly installed Divisional Chief of Takoradi Amanful, has vowed to restore the town’s lost glory.
His mission is clear: to transform Main Spain from a crime hotspot into a place of progress and economic opportunities.
He made this bold declaration during the commissioning of a new water project, one of five he plans to provide for the community.
The project, beyond its immediate benefit of ensuring access to clean water, symbolises his broader commitment to development and change.
By addressing basic needs, he aims to lay the foundation for a renewed Amanful, where crime is replaced with opportunity and dignity.

The Plan for Main Spain
One of Nana Obo Atta Kojo Essuon III’s most ambitious goals is to completely restructure Main Spain. His vision is to replace its crime-ridden streets with a modern taxi station, creating a space that fosters lawful employment and economic stability.
This transformation will not only dismantle the long-standing network of illegal activities but also provide a legitimate source of income for many in the community.
The Road to Redemption
The challenge ahead is immense. Changing an area with such deep-rooted illegal activities will require more than just infrastructure.
It will demand community engagement, enforcement of laws, and alternative opportunities for those currently reliant on crime for survival.
However, with strong leadership, a clear vision, and the support of the people, Amanful stands on the brink of a new era.
For the first time in years, there is a sense of hope. Nana Obo Atta Kojo Essuon III is not just speaking of change. He is taking action. Through water projects, structural reforms, and a clear plan for Main Spain, he is paving the way for a rebirth.

Amanful’s story is being rewritten, and this time, it is one of transformation, renewal, and a future far removed from the shadows of its past.
