Acting Executive Secretary of the National Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapons Dr. Adam Bonaa, has called for calm and restraint in the wake of renewed violence and rising tensions in Bawku.
Dr. Bonaa's remarks follow the latest surge in violence in Bawku, where renewed clashes on Wednesday afternoon led to the death of one person and the setting ablaze of the private residence of the Bawku Divisional Police Commander, ACP Adamu Seidu, in the Upper East Region.
According to him, the recent acts of lawlessness, including the burning of the police commander's residence, signal a dangerous escalation that must be de-escalated immediately to prevent further chaos.
Speaking in an interview on Joy FM's Newsnight on Wednesday, April 9, the security analyst condemned the actions of individuals taking the law into their own hands, stressing that the security situation in Bawku was deteriorating and required urgent dialogue.
"I want to urge that there should be calm. People should stop taking the laws into their own hands," he appealed.
He called on the feuding factions — the Kusasis and Mamprusis — to prioritise dialogue and peaceful engagement to address their longstanding differences.
He expressed hope that the security agencies would be able to restore calm within the shortest possible time to pave the way for proper investigations into the recent violent incidents.
