Eugene Odoi Addo, the Sunyani Area Manager of the National Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo), says the company is working to resolve the intermittent and unannounced power outages in parts of its operational area.
He said the power failures were due to some technical challenges, refuting public rumours that the company was undertaking load shedding exercise popularly known as ‘dumsor’ in the area.
Interacting with the media in Sunyani, Mr Addo said some NEDCo engineers from Tamale had arrived to assist the Sunyani Area to tackle the technical challenges and restore full power supply and urged the public to remain calm.
“We are unhappy about the power failures because if that happens, we also lose huge revenue”, he stated, and assured that the problem would be solved as soon as possible.
Meanwhile, some residents and the business community in Sunyani have expressed worry about the frequent and prolonged power outages in parts of the municipality.
Describing the situation as frustrating, some business owners including operators of barbering and hairdressing salons, called on the NEDCo to resolve the problem.
In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA), Madam Akosuah Pokuah, a hairdresser, said the power failures were having a huge toll on their economic activities.
Some of them also said they were unhappy about the situation because frequent power outages were also a serious security concern.
Master George Donkor, a student at the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UNER), noted that “the problem is affecting our studies”.
Mr Kwame Asiedu, a resident at the Sunyani Berlin Top, also urged the government to intervene and resolve the matter once and for all, noting that “my refrigerator is now faulty because of the frequent power outages.”
