The University of Ghana has announced the historic promotion of Dr. Charisa Peace Ngozi Ogbogbo to the rank of Associate Professor in Applied Mathematics, making her the first woman to attain professorship in the Mathematical Sciences since the University’s establishment in 1948.
The University Council approved the promotion on May 29, 2025, describing it as a recognition of Dr. Ogbogbo’s exceptional scholarly contributions, leadership, and commitment to academic excellence in the field of mathematics.
Dr. Ogbogbo currently heads the Department of Mathematics at the University of Ghana, where she has served since 2010.
Her elevation to associate professor not only reflects her personal achievements but also represents a significant milestone in the university’s history of advancing gender inclusion in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
Dr. Ogbogbo holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics from Abia State University in Nigeria.
She also earned Master’s degrees in both Economics and Mathematics from the University of Ibadan, where she later completed a Ph.D. in Mathematics.
Her areas of research span Applied Mathematics, Financial Mathematics, Stochastic Analysis, and Mathematical Modelling.
She has authored several peer-reviewed publications, including her recent work titled “Solution to Nonlinear Wave and Evolution Equations by Direct Algebraic Method,” published in 2023.
Dr. Ogbogbo’s scholarly work has received widespread recognition, with her research garnering over 89 citations. She has also supervised numerous graduate theses and mentored upcoming mathematicians, particularly young women pursuing careers in STEM.
As Head of the Department of Mathematics, Dr. Ogbogbo has championed academic reform, innovation, and mentorship. She played a key role in organizing the Graduate School of Mathematical Modelling (GSMM2023) conference, which brought together leading mathematicians and students from across Africa.
