Renowned Nigerian data scientist Doris Onuoha has been named one of the recipients of the Data Innovation Excellence Award at the 2022 Tech Trailblazer Awards held in Lagos, Nigeria.
The annual event recognises outstanding professionals across Africa whose work in technology and data science is driving transformative change across industries.
Onuoha was honoured for her pioneering contributions to data-driven banking solutions, significantly advancing fraud detection, credit risk management, and customer analytics within several West African financial institutions.
Presented to only two individuals each year, the award is among the most selective honours in Nigeria’s tech ecosystem, reserved for innovators whose solutions show exceptional impact and scalability. A multi-stage selection process—led by senior data science experts, academic leaders, and government advisors—ensures that only the best are recognised.
“This is a distinction typically reserved for those at the very top of their profession—people redefining what’s possible with data,” said Dr Adaobi Eze, a member of the award jury.
Speaking at the ceremony, Onuoha stated: “This recognition is for every data scientist working behind the scenes to solve problems that affect millions. Data, when used responsibly and creatively, can truly change the future.”
The event, which welcomed delegates from countries including Ghana and Sierra Leone, underscored the growing role of data innovation in Africa’s digital economy.
Onuoha’s recognition cements her reputation as one of the continent’s most influential voices in applied data science, particularly in finance and digital infrastructure.
With this award, Doris Onuoha joins an elite circle of innovators reshaping how data is harnessed to solve critical challenges across Africa and beyond.
